365 - June 2014

It's now been six months since I joined the editorial staff of the Whig-Standard. There's still a lot to learn but I'm loving the challenge.

June 1, 2014 - In the shadow of a larger tree

The free event, which kick offs Cycling Week, was hosted by Cycle Kingston and had a variety of biking related exhibitors and vendors for people to check out, along with a chance to learn about bike safety and maintenance. June 4, 2014 - The Climate Action Clothesline art installation, for the Clean Air Day, could be seen in Confederation Park on Wednesday June 4, 2014. “Flapping in the wind there are hundreds of messages of how we individually can act, and as a whole can reduce greenhouse gasses,” Dan Hendry, public education and promotions coordination with the City of Kingston. “The climate cloths are basically months of artwork from students in our community ranging from K to 12."

June 6, 2014 - The sun came out for the 15th anniversary of the Relay for Life in Kingston held at Royal Military College on on Friday June 6,  2014 night.  With more than 75 teams and 600 participants walking in the 12-hour fundraiser, organizers are hoping to reach their goal of $225,000.

June 7, 2014 - Dana Acton-Richards, a nine-year-old martial arts student, showed skill, endurance and determination as she participated in the Tallack Martial Arts annual black belt and senior belt examinations on Saturday June 7,  2014.

June 8, 2014 - Kingston Ponies catcher, Kurtis Miller, tags out Ottawa-Nepean Cardinal Brad McKay at the plate after McKay tried to score on a sacrifice fly out to left field during the top of the sixth in game one of a double header played at Megaffin Park on Sunday June 8,  2014. Ponies won both games, 3-2 and 1-0.

June 11, 2014 - Kingston and the area faced a heavy rainfall warning with the possibility of 50 to 70mm falling by late Thursday. Storm drains overflowed onto local streets, like Kingston Street in Portsmouth Village, causing flooding in some areas on Wednesday June 11, 2014.
*EXTRA* June 11, 2014 - Anne Robertson, coordinator of the Kingston Field Naturalists 2014 Great Canadian Bioblitz, in her home preparing for the event on Wednesday June 11, 2014. The annual 24-hour nature blitz will take place at Big Sandy Bay on Wolfe Island starting at 2 p.m. on Friday.

June 13, 2014 - So, this was how I started my Friday the 13th. By almost stepped on a snake (because it was at the newsroom door in the lobby) as I was the last to leave the newsroom after an evening of election coverage.

June 19, 2014 - Participants at the Inclusive Music Workshop got the chance to play the Reactable, which uses touch to help the users create music. Dr. Jesse Stewart , award winning Canadian musician and educator, held a free inclusive music workshop at The Box at H'art Centre as part of their Able Artist series on Thursday June 19, 2014.
*EXTRA* June 19, 2014 - A collision between a tractor trailer and Volkswagon Golf had the westbound lane of Hwy. 401 closed for most of the afternoon on Thursday June 19, 2014. The driver of the tractor trailer, who was carrying 40,000 lbs of potash fertilizer, was charged with careless driving after striking the smaller vehicle from behind just before Hwy. 15. There were only minor injuries reported to the tractor trailer driver, the driver and passengers of the VW Golf were unharmed.

June 21, 2014 - The wall that runs along Ontario Street that protects Fort Frontenac. For the first time since the 1700s the gates of the fort were opened to the public and people were given guided tours as part of Doors Open Ontario, a province wide initiate to promote and showcase the architecture, culture and historic treasured locations throughout  Ontario.
*EXTRA* June 21, 2014 - Markham Raiders wide receiver Chris Paul holds on to the ball in front of Kingston Grenadiers varsity defensive back, Ian Swann during the first quarter of the Grenadiers home game at Loyalist Collegiate on Saturday June 21, 2014. The Grenadiers took the early lead and never looked back en route to a 71-10 final.
*EXTRA* - June 21, 2014 - Kingston Derby Girls Skateful Dead jammer Boney L'Ass gets the crowds riled up during a jam against the Lindsay Roller Derby on Saturday June 21, 2014 at the Memorial Centre during the first game of the KDG  Schools Out for Summer double header. With only seconds left in the last jam Kingston's Skateful Dead scored to come away with the win, 183 to 180. In the second game of the doubleheader the Kingston Derby Girls Disloyalists faced off against the Durham Derby Devils with the Disloyalists winning 209 to 98. There were over 400 in attendance.

*EXTRA* June 25, 2014 - Bob Brooks, Domino Theatre vice-president, is helping set the stage lights on Wednesday in anticipation of the return of Come Play By The Lake, the theatres one-act festival, which opens July 4. The festival had been put on hold in 2008 after the move from their King Street location and Brooks is hoping to see it become an annual event in their new home in the former Harold Harvey arena.

June 28, 2014 - Harley, a Kingston 4 Paws Academy puppy in training sits with six-year old Isabelle Marois and her mother Meaghan Gauthier-Marois outside the Loyalist Emergency Services Amherstview Fire Hall where the family is holding a Canada Day charity fundraiser on Saturday June 28, 2014. Isabelle is on the wait list for a service dog through Kingston 4 Paws Academy and her family is trying to help offset the cost with the fun-themed fundraiser.
*EXTRA* June 28, 2014 - The Fort Henry Guard Drums marched and played rousing military songs from the First World War during the Tribute to the Great War.
*EXTRA* June 28, 2014 - Members with 46th Productions demonstrated how to carry and load a Vickers Medium Machine Gun during the Tribute to the Great War at Fort Henry.
*EXTRA* June 28, 2014 - The Tribute to the Great War culminated in a fireworks display.
June 29, 2014 - Jayne Ayre, owner and artist of Kismet Clay Designs, likes to make creative and whimsical clay characters that brings a smile to her patrons faces.  She is seen here in her booth with her works on display on Sunday. Ayre was one of the 150 artist and artisans participating in Artfest this weekend in City Park.
*EXTRA* June 29, 2014 - Using different colours on different days, the Mural installation gives the community chance to build on each others creativity. Yellow and orange are the colours being used on Sunday. In it's third year, Artfest has grown into a four-day festival that celebrates all things art, including music, dance, artwork, theatre and more and can be found in City Park.  The four pathways through the park are full of people looking, tasting, hearing and sharing the love of art.
