Stars on Ice 2013 at the Rogers K-Rock Centre

Over the years I've been to my share of Stars on Ice shows.  I love watching the skills, jumps and artistry.  So, when the chance to cover this years show as media came up... I jumped at the chance.

Thanks to a fellow photoj (Eric), a bit of confusion was cleared up and I got in as media.  We got to sit in the "players bench" for the full first half of the show.  I wish I had brought my 2nd body with a wider lens but that's 20/20.  I joked around with Eric that his continuous shutter was a bit faster - he'd get 8 shots off for every one I took, but then I'd have less the edit through at the end of the night :D

During the intermission break I went out to the main hallway, found an electrical outlet in one of the corner nooks, pulled out my laptop and bunkered down to edit and file my pics before deadline.  Once I got a good selection filed I decided to head back in.  I was told that if I could find an empty seat, and not block anyone's line of sight, I could shoot the rest of the show.  I caught the last 2-3 routines and the finale.  Ah, Kurt Browning in the rain.

On my way out I spotted a very excited woman with a homemade sign.  I watched her for a bit, building up the courage to ask if I could take her picture.  Turns out she was a BIG Patrick Chan fan and even got the chance to have him autograph her sign before the show.  I took her pic, captioned and filed it before leaving the building.

The next day I was happy to see one of my Kurt Browning photos on the front page.

When I got into the newsroom I filed the rest of my shots and they uploaded them to a gallery on the Whig website  - The Whig Standard - Gallery

It's a great feeling when you do a good job and push yourself outside of your routine/comfort zone as well.

On to the next challenge :D
